Art as Your Design Inspiration
Sometimes a room feels bland, unfinished, or stale and we don't know how to break free from the "blah". Other times we just want a change but don't want to replace everything. Then there are the times you need a whole reboot. No matter what your reason or goal, wall art that you love, can be just what you need to easily create a cohesive, well designed room.
Easy Neutral Room Accent:
If your space is already neutral in color (browns, grays, black, whites or any combo of them) you have a fantastic base layer. Now you can select artwork with the color accent you desire, and pull colors and textures from the art, into the space, with small textiles like pillows and throw blankets, or decor items like candle holders, vases or trays. Whether it is a whisper of color, or a bold pop of color, your entire room will transform in a snap.
Mix it Up:
Later on, you can have a whole new color twist by choosing different colors from the same artwork, and changing out those small accessories and color accents. Because your investment pieces (the bigger stuff that you replace less often, like furniture, flooring, and paint) are neutral, you have given yourself longevity in design. When you select artwork that has a few colorways to play with, you have set yourself up for a room that will look fantastic for decades.
Defined Color Palette:
What if you have an investment piece that is bold in color and you aren't ready to change it? Simply find artwork with a bit of that color in it. It doesn't need to be the dominant color of the art, just existing in it somewhere. Then, use the other colors in the art for your accents. Tip: Throw blankets and accent pillow covers are a great way to cover a bit of a bold colored sofa or chair, and soften it's impact in the room.
You Don't Know Where to Start:
If you are looking for a total redo and are overwhelmed, don't panic. Art is the easiest way to create a cohesive, well planned room. Just pick artwork that creates the emotion in you, that you want in your space. Whether it is vibrant, lively and colorful, or it is soft and dreamy, your space will take on the feeling of the artwork you select, when you use it as your inspiration. Once again using the colors and textures from the art, in your space, with small textiles like pillows and throw blankets, or decor items like candle holders, vases or trays.
Take your artwork with you (or have it on your phone) anytime you are selecting items for the room. I like to say you want it to feel like the item melts into the artwork when you set them on top or side by side. If it feels jarring, it isn't the right fit. You should have a whole body feeling, like puzzle pieces snapping into place. It really is the easiest way to design a room. Shhh... designer's secret!
By bringing the art into the space, your room will take on a rich, 3-dimensional experience that you love being surrounded in.
